Candidates may sit for the Written Parts of the Competency in Optometry Examination in Australia (Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane and other capital cities if suitable arrangements can be made), New Zealand (Auckland), United Kingdom (London), South Africa (Johannesburg) and the USA (Washington). The venue for the Clinical Parts of the examination will be the Australian College of Optometry in Melbourne, Australia.

Second Session: Monday 5 September 2016 (3 hour MCQ paper), Tuesday 6 September 2016 (3 hour short answer paper)

Applicants are only able to apply for the examination once they have been assessed as eligible. Please note that Form 2 applications take a minimum of 2 weeks to process, Form 3 applications take a minimum of 6 weeks to process.


Clinical Parts

Both sections of the Clinical Examination (Skills Station and Patient Examination) are held over a period of one week.  This means that candidates will undertake the Skills Station and Patient Examination components of the examination within a five day period (scheduled from Monday morning to Friday evening).

You need JavaScript enabled to view it.) on successful completion of the written examination component.  Candidates are able to select their preferred session, however, this session is not guaranteed.  Sessions will not be allocated and candidates will not be advised of final session until after the relevant closing dates.

The clinical examination venue is the Australian College of Optometry in Melbourne.

Written examinations: The fees are payable per attempt.  There is no refund for failure.

Clinical examinations: The fees for the skills examination are payable per attempt.  There is no refund for failure in the skills examination, however, if a candidate fails the skills examination, and is therefore not able to sit the patient examination in the same session, the patient examination fee is not payable and a candidate who paid for this examination has two options.

1. A full refund of the patient examination fee (a $200 administration fee will be charged)


2. The patient examination fee can be retained by OCANZ as a credit to be used towards a future clinical examination (no administration fee will be charged).

Withdrawal prior to the written and clinical examination: Withdrawal from an examination must be provided in writing to This email address is being protected from spambots. All refunds for withdrawal from OCANZ written and clinical examinations will incur a $200 administration fee.  The amount refunded is dependent on the notice provided by the candidate, as outlined below:


  • Day before examination to 14 days before examination
    Refund 25% of fee paid (less $200 administration fee)
  • 15 days to 6 weeks before date of examination
    Refund 50% of fee paid (less $200 administration fee)
  • 6 weeks to 8 weeks before date of examination
    Refund 75% of fee paid (less $200 administration fee)
  • More than 8 weeks before date of examination
    Refund 100% of fee paid (less $200 administration fee)
